Adrian Frutiger was a Swiss type designer. Born in Unterseen, he became a typesetters apprentice at the Otto Schlaefli AG printing press in Interlaken at the age of sixteen. He worked there for four years, before enrolling at the Zurich Kunstgewerbschule. In 1952, he relocated to Paris and took on the role as art director for the Deberny & Peignot type foundry.Gallinelli, 2015. In 1962 Frutiger left Deberny & Peignot to found a design studio in partnership with Andre Gürtler and Bruno Pfäffli.Type Directors Club, n.d.
His Univers typeface was initiated during his studies in Zurich and released with Deberny & Peignot in 1957. Frutiger cites Walter Käch as a central influence in its conception.Osterer & Stamm, 2021, p. 18.
