A copy of the first issue of Atuagagdliutit is housed in the collection of Norwegian artist Guttorm Guttormsgaard.

Hinrich Johannes Rink, a Dane of German descent, arrived on Greenland as a geologist in 1848. During his time with the Inutits, he came to view the Danish colonist rule as detrimental to a Greenlandic cultural identity. Rink set up a press in Nuuk, Kolonien Godthaabs Bog- og Steentrykkeri (“The Colony of Godthaabs’ Book and Lithographic Printing Press”), and in 1861 he founded the first Kalaallisut-language newspaper, Atuagagdliutit. The first issue, published on 1 January, pioneered the use of illustrations – woodcuts, drawings, even full-color watercolors.
