With the fall of the Soviet Union, the opportunity arose once again to codify the written language. In May of 1989, the Institute of Linguistics, Literature and History at the Karelian Research Centre Russian Academy of Sciences (ILLH KarRC RAS) hosted a linguistic conference in Petrozavodsk with special focus on Karelian language revivalization.Boiko, 2019.
Resulting from the conference, the institute began work on orthographic proposals for the Olonets-Karelian and Karelian Proper dialects. The work on the Olonets-Karelian orthography was led by the current vice director of ILLH KarRC RAS, Lyudmila Fyodorovna Markianova, and the development of the Karelian Proper orthography was headed by the philologist Petr “Pekka” Mefod’evič Zaiko.Boiko, 2019.
In Markianova’s Olonets-Karelian spelling the close front unrounded vowel /i/ is marked by the letter “ü”, constrasting with Zaikov’s “y”.Boiko, 2019.
The two orthographies were approved by Resolution of the Council of Ministers of the KASSR later that same year, followed by the publication of school primers for Olonets-KarelianMarkianova & Dubrovina, 1990; Boiko, 1993. and Karelian Proper,Zaikov, 1993a & 1995. grammars,Zaikov, 1992–93; Markianova, 2002. dictionaries,Markianova & Boiko, 1996; Zaikov & Rugoeva, 1999. as well as additional linguistic material.Boiko, 2019.
